ADL Debuts ‘Words to Action’ Program for Hillel Students

  • April 1, 2014

Occidental College Hillel students participated in a ADL’s new education program, Words to Action on March 27. Associate Regional Director Ariella Schusterman and A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Project Director (and Occidental alum) David Reynolds led the students in this interactive program designed to teach college students how to respond to anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias on campus.

Oxy students learn about the “pyramid of hate.”

The participants learned how to distinguish among anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism, and anti-Israel bias. They also explored several case studies taken from real-life examples and discussed ways to respond.  As a result of the program, one student said she is “more motivated to not be a bystander during bias-motivated incidents.”  Another student remarked, “I thought this session was very informative and beneficial to my education.”

In November 2013, ADL was invited to Occidental College to help students, faculty and administration understand hate crimes, hate incidents, anti-Semitism and the importance of an inclusive, welcoming college community.  The campus reached out to ADL after a swastika was found drawn on a Jewish student’s door.
