ADL Expresses Concern about “Holohoax” Chalkings at UCR

  • July 21, 2016

The Anti-Defamation League has been working with UCR Hillel and the University of California, Riverside, administration about the recent graffiti chalkings that have included the word “Holohoax.”

Holocaust Denial is an anti-Semitic propaganda movement that seeks to deny the reality of the Nazi regime’s systematic mass murder of six million Jews during World War II. It generally depicts historical accounts of this genocide as propaganda, generated by a Jewish, or “Zionist,” conspiracy.

The use of the term “Holohoax” is anathema to the Jewish community and to the memory of those who perished.  ADL has provided those involved with resources on Holocaust Denial from our Holocaust Education curriculum, Echoes and Reflections – Leaders in Holocaust Education.

More information on Holocaust Denial can be found on the ADL blog:

We are pleased with the July 21 statement issued by the UCR Chancellor Kim Wilcox:

Dear UCR Community,

In recent weeks, we have discovered several incidents of chalked graffiti on campus espousing denial of the Holocaust. On behalf of the UCR administration, I condemn these acts of anti-Semitism and hate speech that denigrate the millions of Jews who died, in addition to those of other targeted communities.

These incidents, along with other recent anti-immigrant vandalism, have been reported to UCPD, and we will continue our collaboration with campus leadership groups toward fostering a campus community where all feel safe and valued.

We are a community defined by our commitment to mutual respect and dignity for all. I ask for your continued dedication to these values.

 Sincerely,

Kim A. Wilcox
Chancellor
