UPDATE: This program was so well-received, that ADL presented it again the evening of March 8 to additional JCC parents.
In response to a widely-publicized recent bomb threat against the Westside Jewish Community Center, ADL’s LA Education Director Dave Reynolds gave a presentation on How to Talk to Children about Hate and Violence at the JCC on March 3. The presentation was attended by parents and staff members.
The focus of the presentation was to discuss how — in the aftermath of violence, terrorism, or other incidents of hate — educators, caregivers and family members can give children and teens the tools they need to understand what has happened and take steps to challenge hate in safe and effective ways.
Reynolds was able to provide resources and conversation topics for parents dealing with the aftermath of the recent bomb threat.
ADL focused on sharing resources with the parents including:
- Discussing Hate and Violence with Children (also available in Spanish)
- Empowering Young People in the Aftermath of Hate
- The Question Corner
- Table Talk: Family Conversations About Current Events
- Books Matter
