ADL began a series of trainings at Pitzer College with a customized training for more than 30 faculty, staff and students on May 9. ADL Education Director David Reynolds and Associate Regional Director Ariella Schusterman provided a training, Hate Speech, Free Speech and Creating an Authentically Inclusive Campus, tailored to provide this group additional tools and resources to continue creating a safe and inclusive campus culture. The agenda included a discussion about the Pyramid of Hate, giving participants tools to understand the impact of bias and prejudice, including anti- Semitism, and its tendency to escalate when unchecked. The training also included case studies that provided interactive opportunities to develop strategies for responding to bias issues in the future, and an activity about being an effective and authentic ally. In the evaluations, one participant said that “the case studies were particularly effective. It really facilitated good discussion and ideas to use moving forward.” Another commented that they “just wish it was longer, that we had more time!”
In addition to their participant materials, those present also received ADL’s Cyber-Safety Action Guide and Best Practices for Responding to Cyberhate.
