ADL Mourns the Loss of Sir Nicholas Winton

  • July 2, 2015

The Pacific Southwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League mourns the recent passing of Sir Nicholas Winton, who died on July 1 at the age of 106.  Winton organized the rescue of 669 children from then-Czechoslovakia on what was known as the “Czech Kindertransport.”  Among those rescued was Charles Susskind, the father of ADL Pacific Southwest Regional Director Amanda Susskind.

Winton was honored in 2006 by the Anti-Defamation League with its Courage to Care Award, which recognizes rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust.  ADL National Director Abraham Foxman presented the award to three of the children rescued by Mr. Winton on his behalf.  In his remarks at the time, Mr. Foxman said, “From his greatness of heart and spirit, from his courage and compassion, Sir Nicholas rescued 669 Czech children from doom in the Nazi concentration camps…How different history would have been had there been more Oscar Schindlers…, more Nicholas Wintons, more righteous men and women who, to quote Sir Nicholas himself, ‘I saw what was going on and did what I could to help.’ ”

Upon hearing of his passing Pacific Southwest Regional Director Amanda Susskind tweeted a salute to Winton, “I exist because you saved my dad August 1939.  Rest in peace.”
