ADL’s Latino Jewish Roundtable (LJR) collaborated with the Skirball Cultural Center as a promotional partner for their film series, Latin Jewish Life in Film: Mantener la Fe (Keep the Faith). On March 26, LJR Co-Chair The Hon. Bruce J. Einhorn gave special remarks at the Los Angeles premiere of foreign language film Mr. Kaplan. Einhorn introduced the Roundtable and shared his experiences as a former Nazi war criminal prosecutor for the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations.
The film series features films from four different countries that explore the resilience of the human spirit and the conviction to stand by one’s beliefs, even in the most adverse circumstances. Mr. Kaplan tells the story of Jacob Kaplan, who was forced to flee Europe as a young boy without his parents during World War II. After fifty years of quiet living in Uruguay, Jacob becomes obsessed with the idea that the German owner of a local seafront restaurant is a former Nazi. Ignoring his family’s concerns about his health, Jacob secretly recruits Contreras, a more loyal than honest former police officer, to help him investigate. Together, they will try to repeat the historic capture of Adolf Eichmann by unmasking and kidnapping the German and secretly taking him to Israel.
More information about the series and dates of future films can be found here.
