George Selim, ADL Senior VP of Programs spoke to the Los Angeles Regional Board on September 5.
The leading expert on Homeland Security and countering violent extremism previously worked in three presidential administrations and now oversees the ADL Center on Extremism as well as ADL programs relating to law enforcement and education.
During the “behind the headlines” briefing, Selim presented to board members their “return on investment” by explaining many of ADL’s extraordinary accomplishments over the past year.
These included:
- Charlottesville – monitoring and assessing the extremists prior to the rally, on-the-ground reporting and follow up reports, including Charlottesville: One Year Later
- Investing in law enforcement training and resources
- Cutting edge research such as the groundbreaking Anti-Semitic Targeting of Journalists During the 2016 Presidential Election, a comprehensive analysis of anti-Semitic tweets on twitter, and When Women are the Enemy: The Intersection of Misogyny and White Supremacy
- Hate Uncycled, a new resource to address hate on college campuses
- Unveiling of H.E.A.T. map, a first of-its-kind interactive map pinpointing extremism and hate across the U.S.
Following his presentation, a lively question and answer period followed Selim’s presentation. He took a number of suggestions and provided further information about the programs and priorities of ADL. He ended by pointing out that the LA regional office is a “shining example of what other ADL offices should strive to achieve.”
