After Orlando: ADL Provides Program to the American Red Cross in LA

  • June 20, 2016

In the wake of the recent terrorist attack and hate crime at the LGBTQ nightclub Pulse in Orlando, ADL provided training and responded to questions from employees, interns and young volunteers at the American Red Cross of Los Angeles.

ADL A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute Project Director Dave Reynolds and Assistant Project Director Anthony Eftimeo joined American Red Cross of Los Angeles Executive Director Jarrett Barrios and his team to provide ADL’s expertise on hate crimes, domestic terrorism, mass shootings and gun violence.

Following a vigil for the victims in Orlando, ADL’s education staff spent several hours with the American Red Cross team in Los Angeles sharing resources from ADL’s Education Division as well as the Center on Extremism.  ADL staff spoke about the importance of finding a balance between countering extremism and combatting stereotypes—particularly those that target Muslims and LGBTQ people.  They also discussed action steps including raising awareness through individual conversations and media, contacting elected officials, and supporting gun violence prevention advocacy organizations.
