Helene and Joseph Sherwood Prize Luncheon

The Helene and Joseph Sherwood Prize for Combating Hate recognizes law enforcement activities during 2012 and 2013 that demonstrate relentless dedication to containing and minimizing the prevalence and severity of hate motivated behavior perpetrated in their communities, and performed with professionalism, effectiveness and visibility.

Senior Deputy District Attorney John Barrick

Ventura County District Attorney’s Office

Committed to investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, Barrick has built a reputation among his colleagues of thinking “outside the box” when fighting against hatred and bigotry.

 

Senior Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Siegel

Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office

Siegel significantly broadened her office’s approach to hate crime prosecutions through her unique prosecutorial tactics combatting race-motivated crimes between inmates at the county jail.

 

Compton Varrio 155 Gang Investigation and Prosecution

Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Angeles Field Division; Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California; United States Department of Justice

This multi-agency task force used innovative investigative and prosecutorial techniques, including applying federal hate crimes laws to strengthen charges against gang members, to prevent the Compton Varrio 155 gang from terrorizing African American residents of Compton.

 

IMPACT

Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office

This unique partnership created an education and enforcement model outside the traditional roles of law enforcement and criminal prosecution to address gang-related hate crimes in the community.

 

The Los Angeles Police Department Counter Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau Liaison Unit

Los Angeles Police Department

Through innovative techniques of community-oriented policing, social media and art exhibits, this unit educates the community about hate and terrorism.
