An insiders’ briefing, After Charlottesville: What’s Next? was held for the regional Executive Committee, ADL Second Century Campaign and other longtime, loyal ADL supporters November 7 at the ADL office.
ADL Senior Investigative Researcher and Director of Special Projects Joanna Mendelson laid out the big picture of hate groups and trends both pre- and post-Charlottesville. In addition to providing background on white supremacist ideology, she shared that over the past 10 years (2007-2016), domestic extremists of all kinds have killed at least 372 people in the United States. Of those deaths, approximately 74% were at the hands of right-wing extremists such as white supremacists, sovereign citizens, and militia adherents.
She also discussed ADL’s recent audit of anti-Semitic incidents that showed a 67% increase in anti-Semitic incidents so far this year over last year. According to Mendelson, threats and old theories of white supremacy are gaining increasing prominence in the public square, on the airwaves and on the Internet.
Harvey Prince, Chair of the Regional Second Century Campaign emphasized the need for people to include ADL in their estate plans to ensure that ADL remains strong and is able to fight hate and anti-Semitism far into the future. Prince mentioned different ways to make an impact by including ADL in people’s estate plans. He also encouraged participants to support the Michael LaPrade Institute for Confronting Anti-Semitism, named after Harvey and Suzanne Prince’s beloved grandson who died in a tragic accident six years ago.
