ADL Encouraged by Quick Response to Swastika Armband at Shadow Hills High School

  • November 2, 2016

The Anti-Defamation League was encouraged to hear of a quick and decisive response to reports of a student at Shadow Hills High School coming to school wearing a Nazi swastika armband on Halloween.  According to the reports, the student was promptly brought to the office where she was asked to remove the offensive symbol, and she complied.  ADL was immediately in touch with district and school administrators who demonstrated that they have taken the matter seriously, responded quickly, and are continuing to address the inappropriate behaviors that have occurred on this campus.

As one of the nation’s preeminent providers of anti-bias education, ADL’s curricula routinely include resources for teachers, parents and students to foster positive intergroup relations and challenge prejudices.  Thanks to the generosity of the Jewish Federation of the Desert, ADL has been providing anti-bias and bullying prevention programs to the Desert Sands Unified School District, including Shadow Hills High School, since 2010.  In December 2016, ADL will be bringing its Becoming An Ally program to the campus.  ADL looks forward to continuing to help the school provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
